TRAINING PROGRAMS

A good planning commissioner takes the future seriously,
works hard, and is patient, and willing and able to make
decisions. This training will provide an overview to
help you understand the legal and policy framework for
planning in Alaska’s communities. It will also provide you
with information on the powers and duties of the
planning commission. The training will be based on the
Alaska Planning Commission Handbook. This handbook was
updated in 2003 by the Department of Community and Economic
Development in cooperation with the Alaska Chapter of the
American Planning Association. The training covers
aspects associated with:
1. Comprehensive and other types of planning
2. Zoning and platting
3. How a planning commission operates
4. The authority and duties of the commission
and standards for commission
decision-making .
